BIOGRAPHY

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Santa Monica and Southern Oregon, Kirk Ross is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter currently living in Pasadena, California. He began playing piano at age five and studied classically up until high school when he turned his attention to the electric bass and rock music. After high school, Kirk studied music at Berklee College of Music for two years then moved to Los Angeles, taught himself to play guitar and began to write songs.

He recorded his first album on a cassette 8-track recorder, pressed up a thousand CDs and set off for Europe to support the record, busking on the streets in Germany, France and Holland for six weeks. He made enough money selling CDs and collecting donations to recoup the cost of his plane ticket as well as the entire cost of making his CD. The album features Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums and ultimately garnered Kirk a co-publishing deal with music publisher Windswept Pacific.

Over the following few years, he wrote and recorded two more albums--one with a rock trio called Fastcow and the other with an acoustic duo called Atwater. With both bands, Kirk played all the local clubs in Los Angeles, including The Whiskey, The Roxy and The El Rey Theatre.

Break My Silence...

Eventually Kirk returned to his solo music and he began a slow process of recording a new full length album under the creative direction of friend and music executive, Paul Broucek. He first tapped the talent of Abe Laboriel Jr. (Paul McCartney) to record solid drum tracks for ten songs, then guitarist and friend Jeff Thall (Bryan Ferry) to lay down a rich bed of atmospheric electric guitars. This became the foundation on which Kirk would build the entire album. Over the next year, he spent all his spare time doing the overdubs in his home studio, recording vocals, bass, acoustic guitars and Rhodes electric piano. He took his time getting all the songs to sound exactly how he had envisioned them.

When Kirk was finished with all the recording, Paul Broucek hired renowned London mixing engineer Andy Bradfield (David Gray, James Blunt) to mix the album and Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (Eric Clapton, Elton John) to master it in Hollywood. The result is a richly dark, organic acoustic pop record, with a smooth overall production and pleasingly rough edges.

Reviews

July 31st, 2012. By Chuck Campbell for knoxville.com

Kirk Ross sets himself apart from other singer-songwriters with tonal continuity on his new “Break My Silence.”

The West Coast native, now based in Pasadena, Calif., crafts a deep, trance-esque ambience by blending languid, humming instrumentation with his deadpan voice, the elements dovetailing into a near-drone.

Although it gets tiresome at times, the effect is more mesmerizing than monotonous.

“Break My Silence” feels like a moody meditation on the part of Ross, an open-hearted and intimate experience in which listeners might welcome a little more distance. But it’s straightforward and seems genuine, if periodically unstable.

The release is even more personal in that Ross plays acoustic guitar, electric piano and bass: Jeff Thall’s electric guitar is the most prominent outsider, with Haley Glennie-Smith making a striking single appearance with guest vocals on “The Bull & The Fish” (which Ross eventually dominates with such lines as, “Oh for the length of our lives, hunting for each other, standing side by side ...”).

His long vocal notes and the resonant strum make a consistent backdrop as Ross weaves through various perspectives with what seems like detached analysis. Yet darkness often clouds his lyrics, many of them about troubled relationships. “Why do we always fight like this?” he complains on “The Kingdom,” while on “A Little Love” he pleads, “I’m broken and I need your arms to carry me.” “Groundhog Day” best sums up his position with “Please take care with my heart, it tends to break,” though Ross effectively steps out of himself on the delicate and folksy “Father,” observing, “A quiet little girl prays for her father to rescue her.”

Other disquieting lines surface, as he feels “trapped in a little cage” and “lost in an endless maze” on the dreamy title track and moans on “It Takes Me Away,” “I’m so tired I can’t even close my eyes.”

However, there’s a weird reassurance in the gloom, comforting self-awareness even as Ross sings “Help me” in the incandescent lullaby “Blue Light.”

Apparently beauty and grace offset the devastation of hurt and fear.

Break My Silence is the third solo project by Kirk Ross.  At the tender age of five, he began playing piano and pursued classical studies until his teens when he began to take up the electric bass and developing a taste for rock and roll.  Ross then went on to study music at the Berklee College of Music for a couple of years before launching out to find himself musically.

Kirk recorded his first CD on a cassette 8-track recorder and features Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums. Brimming with courage and confidence, Ross ordered up a thousand copies and headed to Europe, performing on the streets of Germany, France and Holland for nearly two months. The effort made Ross enough money selling CDs and collecting donations to purchase plane ticket home as well as the entire cost of making his CD.

Fast forward to today and Break My Silence.

Over a year ago, Kirk began the slow process of recording a CD under the creative direction of friend and music executive, Paul Broucek. He first tapped Abe Laboriel Jr. (Paul McCartney) to record the drum tracks for ten songs, then guitarist and friend Jeff Thall (Bryan Ferry) to lay down a rich bed of atmospheric electric guitars. This gave Ross the desired foundation on to build the entire album. Over the next year, he laboriously spent a tremendous amount of time doing the overdubs in his home studio, recording vocals, bass, acoustic guitars and piano.

When Kirk was finished with all the recording, Broucek hired renowned London mixing engineer Andy Bradfield (David Gray, James Blunt) to mix the album and Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (Eric Clapton, Elton John) to master the disc. The result is a richly dark, organic acoustic pop record, with a smooth overall production and pleasingly rough edges.

Three randomly picked favorites from this great disc are:

The title song, Break My Silence. This tune is worthy of use as a foundation setting tune on a TV show or on a movie soundtrack.  The song is very moody and introspective, it reveals something new – both lyrically and musically with each and every listen.

A Little Love is cry for help, love and affection brilliantly written and beautifully performed, this great little tune was worthy of multiple slaps of the repeat button.

The final randomly chosen favorite of this album full of favorites is the ethereal Blue Light.  The moods and emotions that this song evokes is, again, worth multiple listens, each time revealing the depth of this beautiful song.

Fans of easy, thought provoking music will definitely want to add Kirk Ross’s Break My Silence to their collection of great music because it deserve
s to be heard and enjoyed repeatedly.
