Wanderlust

Wanderlust is among the bands that took us into the ‘90s with the distinct feeling that a full blown movement had begun in Australian jazz. A common factor has been the absorption of influences from many cultures-with quite diverse results.

Along with Clarion Fracture Zone, the catholics and Ten Part Invention, Wanderlust have become almost iconic figures in contemporary jazz in Australia.

Led by Miroslav Bukovsky on trumpet/ flugelhorn, who is of the ‘less is more’ , rather than the ‘higher, louder,faster’ school, WANDERLUST is the inevitable expression of his blend of humour and adventure. The sextet also boasts some of the country’s best musicians, including pianist Alister Spence, James Greening, Fabian Hevia and Jeremy Sawkins. True to their name Wanderlust toured extensively in Australia, Europe and Asia since the mid-90s.

Wanderlust’s first CD release on ABC jazz received an ARIA award in 1994 and their success has continued with great performances and record reviews. Theirs is a many layered music, complex at times but always fluid and persuasive. Wanderlust is not only about bravura playing. It’s about collective music making that explores the individual experiences of its members via a variety of forms filtered through a jazz sensibility. It’s about invention, musical imagination and joy of playing together.

Two decades later Wanderlust still finds quirky, out-of-the- way runways on which to take-off.
